A BIT OF ARCHAEOLOGY ABOUT A MILLENARY TREE: THE CORK OAK

Once the 2024 campaign is over, and with the peace of mind that all the cork is in our yard, a series of feelings arise towards that magnificent tree that makes us open emotions when we uncork a bottle of wine.

The cork oak, which was born millions of years ago, has since undergone several episodes of climatic changes that have affected its population. All this began about 1,800,000 years ago, in the Pleistocene, characterized by periods of extreme cold alternating with warmer periods. These climatic fluctuations were decisive in the geographical distribution and genetic diversity of the cork oak, as the cold forced this species to take refuge in more benign climatic zones. It was at the end of the last glaciation, about 10,000 years ago, that the cork oak colonized its current area of distribution, the Western Mediterranean.
