With the arrival of autumn, some fruits begin to ripen, in our case, you can already see the acorns of the cork oaks that we have in our facilities, stating that we are a cork company. Although the acorns are still green, in a few weeks they will have ripened and will fall from the tree.
Precisely coinciding with the ripeness of the acorns, in the pastures, the “montanera” takes place, which consists of letting the Iberian pigs roam freely to look for food, mainly devouring the acorns they find coming from cork oaks and holm oaks, which constitute their main food and source of energy at this stage. Only the best specimens reach this stage, where the pigs wander several kilometers every day while feeding. The montanera lasts approximately 3 months and the pigs can gain about 65 kg or even more during this last breeding period. The characteristics of the specimens, the optimal conditions of the montanera and the energy and nutritional contribution that the acorn provides, make the quality of the meat of these pigs unique and so appreciated.
So even though we have no pigs, we can at least enjoy watching the evolution of acorns in our cork oaks.
